From the interest of music critic Antonio Fernández-Cid in making a compilation of Galician songs, during the 50s the "Diputación Provincial de Orense" (provincial council of Orense) commissioned twelve spanish composers to write music to poems from the main Galician poets. Meus irmans (my brothers) is the work that Montsalvatge composed for the occasion, from a poem by Ramón Cabanillas, and was published in 1952 by the "Diputación de Orense" in the volume Doce canciones gallegas (twelve Galician songs), dedicated to Antonio Fernández-Cid, which also includes songs by Guridi, Blancafort, Mompou and Toldrà, among others.
