"The madrigal, very popular in the 16th and 17th centuries, emerges from the profane polyphony in the italian courts and drives progressively its theme towards a popular genre in the form of the song. From this free form, of popular assignement, Montsalvatge applies three characteristics derived from the "sardana": a division between the "curts" and the "llargs", the use of rhythmical formulas typical of the post-war "sardana" and a loyalty towards the structure of a "sardana de plaça".
