"If we flashback in time, we find that Montsalvatge wrote some sardanas in the 1930s. They are attempts at youth. It was in 1946 when the master composed two sardanas that have had a certain journey: Elegia a Juli Garreta and Madrigal en forma de sardana. The compositional language of all these sardanas is basically traditional, but the two I have mentioned show a point of modernity that will gradually and constantly be applied to their music."
