"When I started working on these pieces, I created a mental image of three places, --Provence, Havana and New York – as they were pictured in old-fashioned post cards, before multi-colored prints were invented, the kind that was illustrated, “illuminated”, as they used to call it—by hand. These picture prints are the inspiration for each piece in the set. The first one represents two bergerettes from Provence; the second one is a Cuban dance: the habanera ; and the third one evokes the unmistakable spirit of American music."
