Comments
"At first, this piece only had two movements, Balada de Dulcinea and Ritornello. Later, I received a commissioned and I wrote it for piano, violin and cello, a Diálogo con Mompou, and I based it on the a theme from Dialogues (1923), a piano work by that illustrious Catalan composer. I decided to include this piece as a middle movement; I thought the score seemed more complete, more balanced that way. I have commented on several occasions that this piece required a great deal of effort to write for me, since I’d never considered writing a trio, that chamber form par excellence, in which three different lines are juxtaposed and blended together ever so well when they are written correctly."
Xavier Montsalvatge, 1994
"This, written -along with six different Spanish composers- to commemorate the recent death of Frederic Mompou, and submitted as a thematic “in memoriam” for that great musician from Barcelona, (...) In the first piano intervention of Balada de Dulcinea, we could take it as a knight’s offering to the ideal Lady of Toboso, prior to this Dialogue, composed in a similar fashion as Mompou wrote his two in 1923. They have some similar flavor of that French group “Les Six”; in the Ritornelo, with its meridional clarity, he gives us that little touch of West Indian influence which is consubstantial with Montsalvatge’s music."
Antonio Iglesias, 1987.
