Comments
"It had its origin as a string quintet composed during his studies at the Barcelona Conservatory. The work was abandoned until the present format was established and Montsalvatge decided to expand and update it for its premiere. The work, obviously written in a time of turmoil, reflects a neo-romantic feeling for what he felt at the beginning of his creative activity. This love for Italian "verista" music and Puccini's lyricism, which continues today is reflected even in the title and is more evident in three of its movements, being in the Allegretto where the most evolved and independent style typical of his current aesthetic orientation gravitates."
Carlos Figueroa, 1995.
