"This work is composed in three movements: Aproximació a la fuga begins the piece. Montsalvatge uses a harmonic structure that gradually becomes more contrapuntal, although it has little or nothing to do with more strict or academic approaches to counterpoint. The second piece, Capricho sobre la banalidad camuflada, cleverly diguises folk songs within the score; its characteristic ¾ time signature helps to complete the camouflage process. The ironic quality of this music shows us how closely it is related to the works of French Masters, especially those in the “Les Six”. The third piece is Collage para Albéniz. It takes various themes from Albéniz’s works, --among others the “Malagueña” --, and treats them freely thereby creating a score which is elegantly rigorous. This work is dedicated to Montsalvatge’s wife, Elena."
